2023-24 Meals

Recent legislation has passed the Free School Meals bill into law, which provides one free breakfast and one lunch to all students. Please note important changes:

  • This provides one free breakfast and one lunch to all students.
  • The price for a second breakfast or lunch/additional meals is listed below under the  pricing tab.
  • A la carte pricing will remain the same (see pricing tab below).
  • Households are highly encouraged to complete an Application for Educational Benefits to see if they qualify for other important discounts. A new application must be submitted each year.

The Application for Educational Benefits Can Assist in Many Ways!

Additional benefits may include the following. See the Application for Educational Benefits tab below for more details.

  • Free or discounted fees for middle and high school athletics and activities.
  • Fee waivers for college applications and admissions tests.
  • Discounted utilities and internet access.
  • Discounted school fees for band instruments, textbooks, class fees and more.
  • Helping the school qualify for education funds and discounts.

Helpful Resources

Meals for all students will be free this year. This is excellent news for many families and we are excited to serve even more meals to students! That said, we still have a remaining meal debt of more than $35,000 from the current school year, which will not be covered by the new free meals program.

If you have any remaining funds in your child’s meal account, please consider donating them to the Sunshine Fund to help us pay down the current meal debt. There is currently $26,000 in positive meal account balances, which would go a long way toward helping to relieve this debt for families. Every little bit helps!

Thank you in advance for your consideration and support of Richfield families.

Sincerely,

Director Michael Manning

Wellness

At Richfield Public Schools, we want to help students and families stay healthy. Our goal is to promote healthy habits that support learning. Research suggests that when children eat healthy foods and are physically active they have better academic outcomes such as:

  • Better focus in the classroom
  • Increased attendance
  • Higher grades and test scores
  • Increased graduation rates

We are committed to developing lifelong wellness habits in our students. We promote and support student wellness as a goal and good nutrition, regular physical activity and social-emotional wellbeing as part of the total learning environment. Our wellness policy will help:

  • improve academic outcomes by supporting/promoting wellness in schools, including healthy eating and physical activity.
  • increase student and staff awareness about healthy choices.
  • provide guidance and consistency across schools in the district.

For more information about federal requirements related to wellness, visit the Minnesota Department of Education wellness website.
