Top Library Books at Centennial
Looking for the perfect book? Kirsten Phillips, the Media Center paraprofessional here at Centennial, has you covered! Whether you’re looking for a heartwarming picture book, a graphic novel or an exciting story, her recommendations are sure to inspire elementary school readers of all ages. Here are some of her recommendations, including books that are always being checked out from our school library!
Grades PreK-1
The Pigeon series and the Elephant & Piggie series by Mo Willems
From Ms. Phillips: "Somehow Mo Williams manages to make simple picture books with fewer than 10 words per page that are engaging, funny, page-turners. The Pigeon is a favorite of students starting in PreK, but I even have 5th graders who still check these books out from time to time."
Grades 2-4
Mercy Watson series and Tales from Deckawoo Drive by Kate DiCamillo
From Ms. Phillips: "Kate DiCamillo's Mercy Watson series, are short chapter books for beginning readers that follow the adventure of a mischievous pet pig and the lovable characters in her town. All of the books are delightful and the series does not need to be read in order. Once kids graduate from reading Mercy Watson, they can move up to the Tales from Deckawoo Drive series which explores some of the secondary characters introduced in Mercy Watson."
Grades 5 and Above
The Notations of Cooper Cameron by Jane O'Reilly
From Ms. Phillips: "This is a favorite of mine. It is written from the perspective of a boy who is struggling with his mental health after the death of his grandfather. Though it does deal with some sad family struggles, seeing the world through Cooper's eyes is a magical experience that will grow the reader's compassion."
Hilo series by Judd Wick
From Ms. Phillips: "For students who are looking for graphic novels, I recommend the Hilo series by Judd Wick. It is a funny, heart-warming adventure with robots, space aliens and talking wizard cats! This series does need to be read in order to make sense, but with 11 books so far, it's a great series to get addicted to."
